Mr. Yankuba Askia Bio, Director General of the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority (SLPHA), has built a remarkable journey in public service one defined by humility, dedication, and a deep sense of responsibility to the people of Sierra Leone.

Since assuming office, Mr. Bio has embraced public service with a clear understanding of the enormous task ahead. The SLPHA, widely regarded as the country’s economic gateway, requires leadership rooted in integrity, service, and innovation. Over the past two years, Mr. Bio has embodied these qualities, earning the confidence and support of government partners, stakeholders, and port users.

Investigations reveal that his administration recently procured two new RTG cranes to enhance yard operations, efficiency, and reliability in container handling. This upgrade increases the total number of cranes to six, significantly improving turnaround time for vessels and expediting the clearance of goods at the Quay.

His tenure has also ushered in several reforms designed to streamline port activities. Notably, he has drastically reduced unnecessary human traffic into the port a stark contrast to past operations.

On Wednesday, November 12th, 2025, Mr. Bio handed over twenty-six (26), cartons containing one hundred and four (104), gallons of acetone chemicals substances used in the production of Kush and in nail-cleaning demonstrating his commitment to national security and the fight against drug-related activities.

Mr. Bio’s leadership is not anchored in rhetoric but in tangible results. His transformative approach has restored confidence in the New Direction government of President Julius Maada Bio and strengthened trust among importers, exporters, and development partners. His administration has increased the revenue generated for government, earning commendations from the Ministry of Finance.

According to sources, more than three hundred CCTV cameras have been installed across the port, improving monitoring, reducing pilferage, and ensuring stricter adherence to international security standards. “Under his leadership, the Port of Freetown has successfully passed the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code Audit for three consecutive terms, underscoring its reputation as a safe and secure hub for international trade and investment,” William Sao-Lamin told journalists.

Mr. Bio has proven that transformational leadership guided by vision, discipline, and integrity can redefine public institutions and raise performance standards. Today, the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority stands as a model of innovation and growth under his dynamic stewardship.

Automation has also been expanded at the port, reducing the number of agents clearing containers and improving operational efficiency. A new 15-meter-deep terminal is currently under construction, marking another major achievement under his administration.

Despite persistent challenges, Mr. Bio has remained focused on strengthening the port’s operations and consolidating progress. His work ethic reflects a deep commitment to national development and alignment with government policies and programs.

Mr. Yankuba Askia Bio exemplifies selfless leadership. His focus has never been personal recognition, but rather the advancement of the port and the nation. He believes in leadership that listens, understands, and responds to the needs of the people. His policies reflect a vision for an inclusive and prosperous Sierra Leone one where every citizen has the opportunity to succeed.
